Repair vs replace

A repair above 50% of replacement cost is often a reason to consider replacement. The tool flags this planning rule. The recommendation also considers the equipment’s stage of life and the repair cost compared with replacement.

This common HVAC guideline multiplies equipment age by repair cost. The tool applies it to HVAC equipment only. A result over $5,000 often points to replacement. In this tool, a result over $5,000 raises the recommendation to at least “Consider replace”, even when the cost comparison alone points to repair. On its own it does not force “Replace”.

“Repair” means the repair fits the unit’s stage of life and cost compared with replacement. “Borderline” means both options need a closer look. “Consider replace” flags a high repair cost compared with replacement on a younger unit, or two or more repairs in 24 months, or an age × repair cost over $5,000 on HVAC equipment. “Replace” is the tool’s strongest replacement recommendation: it comes from the age and cost comparison, a repair that costs at least as much as the replacement, or a major failure that forces replacement, such as a failed compressor. When a replacement rule applies, the result also shows what the tool would suggest without its replacement rules. Use your professional judgment.

These optional choices list major failures found on this visit, such as a compressor failure, heat exchanger failure or tank leak. A major failure can set the result to “Replace” under the tool’s rules. Leave them blank for minor repairs. Select “Other major failure” for a major issue not listed.
